Building the Education Revolution (BER)
Minister for Finance the Hon. Simon O’Brien MLC said in a 6PR interview that he has charged the Small Business Commissioner, David Eaton, with the task of appointing an independent investigator to investigate the claims of subcontractors who have lost money on BER projects.
Additionally, the Minister announced a number of initiatives to protect subcontractors working on building projects run by BMW. Click here to read the Minister’s media statement.
The Minister also noted that he had previously called on subcontractors who felt they had lost money on BMW/BER projects to contact his office but only two companies have taken up the offer. NECA strongly urges members who have lost money on BER projects to ring the Minister’s office on 6552 5800 and request a meeting with the investigator.

National Licensing update
An eAlert was sent to NECA members on Thursday (4 October) and Friday (5 October) about proposals for national licensing. Under the proposals for national licensing:
• Any licensed contractor (e.g. builder) will be able to bypass electrical contractors and engage electricians under their own licence;
• The training requirement for an electrical contractor’s licence would be removed;
• Licensing fees may increase by 45%;
• There will be no “on-the-job” training requirements to gain an electrical licence (i.e. institutional training); and
• C grade training licences for apprentices will be abolished.
NECA members have asked what they can do to stop the changes. In response, the attached letter has been drafted for your use. Download the letter.
